general description

This sample is a diaspore cut as a rectangle, this cutting is called elongated emeraud cut. From a pinkish brown colour, it turns greenish when the angle viewing changes. It weighs 37.1 carats (equivalent to 7.6 grames) and measures 2.9 x 1.1 x 1.1 cm.

The Muséum national d'Histoire naturelle acquired it after an exchange of minerals with Mr Grundmann. The uncut sample used for this stone comes from Mugla in Turkey.

It is currently exposed in the Treasure Room, within the Gallery of Mineralogy of the Muséum national d’Histoire naturelle.

Species first described in 1801 by René-Just Haüy (1743-1822), French mineralogist and cristallographer

Type-locality: Mramorskoi, Kossoibrod, Ural Russia
