general description

This specimen shows a series of crystals of anatase on matrix. These gray-bluish crystals are very elongated. They are associated with large milky quartz crystals.

This specimen comes from the Pass of La Madeleine in Savoy and was acquired thanks to support from Total. It is kept in the storage rooms of the collections of the Muséum national d'Histoire naturelle (i.e., not yet displayed to the public).

HISTORY : Name inspired by the Greek word [anatasis] meaning stretched, in relation to the elongated habit of its crystals

Species first described in 1801 by René-Just Haüy (1743-1822), French mineralogist and cristallographer

Type-locality: Saint-Christophe, Bourg d'Oisans, Isère, France
